Hello! Since most of you have left the shores, bush-tailed red fox It has made its way into Ventnor’s streets and beaches, putting rabbit populations on high alert.
Whales leap off the beaches of Stone Harbor and Margate, and buzzards hang out in the Ventnor Highlands.
Let’s just say it’s been a crazy offseason. December on the coast is usually wild and stunning.Just this week, torrential downpours gave way to afternoon skies, bathing beach towns In a pink glow.
At Ventnor, the tilt of the sun’s axis combines perfectly with the slight angle of the Absecon Islands from northeast to southwest, and the sunset is right in front of you as you walk along the boardwalk towards Margate. Or at least in front of me, like I am. Most of you people are not here. The sun is dazzling!
It’s nice to work in relative obscurity this time of year, but it also requires a presence. Polar bears crashing on the coast on New Year’s Day are a way for locals to shout out to the world when they least expect it.
I wrote about another winter tradition here: putting up Christmas trees on the beach. This has become very popular, really thingEspecially in Ocean City, where trees have meanings ranging from pets to whales to international peace. I agree with all three. I don’t know how I feel about the beach being populated in this way, because I guess I prefer winter beaches to be left to their own devices. But you know, I’m not going to complain about that.
Want to see it for yourself? Here’s my guide to seeing all the Ocean City Christmas trees on the beach.
Let me know what you think, do you prefer the beach unpretentious or festive in the off season? By replying to this email. I will include your most interesting responses in a future newsletter.

Q&A time
Less than two months after the cancellation of two wind projects in New Jersey, rsted has installed the first wind turbine for another wind farm. Where will these turbines generate wind energy?

B. Long Island
C.North Carolina
D. England

Live locally with whaler Captain Paul Eidman
Earlier this fall, I went whale watching with charter boat captain Paul Eidman, founder of Menhaden Defenders and supporter of Anglers for Offshore Wind. He spoke passionately about whales (we saw several of them), the recovery of the herring populations on which the whales depend, and the importance of (then) wind energy projects planned for waters off New Jersey.
In the past, fishermen have been very supportive of wind energy. What happened?
We had support for five years and then suddenly it became political. Many fishermen are conservative. I lost everyone. Everyone is gone.
Why do the villains you speak of seem to have momentum?
We’re screwed. We weren’t out there screaming like they were. Those people woke up angry. They were protesting and giving interviews to the media.
You believe wind energy will save whales rather than harm them.
The ocean is dying before our eyes. Do I want to see steel in the water? Not really. But it’s the fastest way we can get enough renewable energy to meet system demand
Five days after our story was published, rsted terminated the New Jersey program. I return to Edman. As usual, he didn’t take action.
What do you think it means for rsted to stop Jersey wind farms?
The elimination of both projects in New Jersey means dirtier air and water, fewer local jobs, less energy independence, and more frequent and intense storms. Our children and grandchildren are counting on us to fight for their future!

your shore memory
Patricia Morris recalls the holiday snack bar at Beach Haven. HSB still exists, of course, but still faces a vexing set of demands from the city.
My first and best memories of Beach Haven were at HSB. My grandparents, parents, cousins, aunts, uncles and siblings would all go to HSB for lunch on the hottest, muggiest days. I can still hear my grandmother yelling to my sister and me from the top of the dune to get off the beach to HSB for lunch. I can run faster than the Ice Cream Man! A double cheeseburger with a black and white milkshake (this was before the days of fries, onion rings, grilled cheese, etc.) and a slice of Lady Baltimore. Grandma always orders tomato jelly, which is not what children like. Over the past decade, a new generation has sat outside, staring at the BH water tower, devouring Pier burgers (not me, I’m still a double cheese guy!) and Oreo milkshakes. HSB is the coast to me, part of its heartbeat and this summer we are in our sixth generation.
I always thought I would retire to a beach paradise. I’m reconsidering this decision after the antics with HSB in town.
