Genetic testing in patients with atrial fibrillation could reveal likelihood of severe disease

Dr. Roberts noted, “The vast majority of clinicians do not consider AF to be a hereditary disease, and clinical genetic testing for AF is rarely performed outside of certain specialty clinics. The idea that AF may have an underlying genetic component will hopefully encourage clinicians to take a closer look Family history, especially in early-onset forms of this disease, where genetic factors may be more prominent, will hopefully guide clinicians in careful clinical screening for these disorders.

This white paper was written by a panel of the CCS AF Guidelines Committee who believe that the clinical application of AF genetics deserves special consideration. The writing group consisted of the chairs of the updated AF guideline committees and experts in clinical arrhythmia genetics and AF pathophysiology.
